Lab 21 – Magnetomotive Force:PurposeStudents will explore generation ofmagnetic fields by current loops andthe Right-Hand Rule.TheoryWhen current circulates around ina coil, it creates a magnetic field thatloops around the wires in a kind of flowof field lines sometimes known as amagnetic circuit. The current times thenumber of turns of wire is often calledthe magnetomotive force (MMF). It’snot a force, but the name persists. Moreturns and/or current means a strongerB-field. Its direction can be predictedby curling the fingers of the right handto follow the current around the coil.Extending the thumb predicts the flowof the B-field and the “north” end of thecoil. This is the Right-Hand Rule (RHR).Procedure
The kit contains a spool of magnetwire. Carefully cut the plastic wrappingoff and cut off an arm’s length of wireoff using plyers or a pair of old scissors.
Wrap the wire around and arounda paper towel tube or a small waterbottle to form a coil, then slip it off andwind the free ends around the coil afew times to bind it together as shown.The free ends also need to extend awayfrom the coil at least an inch.
The kit has some sand paper. Tearoff about one square inch of sand paperand pinch it onto the free ends of thecoil, then pull, over and over, to scrapeoff the reddish enamel insulation. Clamp two of the kit’s disk-shapedmagnets onto a piece of thread. Hang itin the middle of a room to figure outwhich of the two faces is “north” andmark it with a piece of tape.
Hold the coil up near the magnetsto show that they have no interest in it.
Get a 9-volt battery from the kit andtouch its terminals to the free ends ofthe coil while near the magnet. Don’tdo it too long as the 9-volt will get hotand run down from the high current.
Using the +/– signs on the battery,find out which way current circulatedaround the coil. Use the RHR to predictwhich side of the coil was north.AnalysisPlease answer these in Canvas:
