Prompt:In the process of reading and studying the Bible, there are two activities that are a part of the interpretive task: exegesis and hermeneutics. While they both sound like some type of horrible contagious disease, they are really tasks that, appropriately applied, will help anyone accurately handle the Word of God and apply it to his/her life.

  • Exegesis is taking a look at the original intent of the words by the author. Besides the literary context or a determination of the literary genre of the scripture, exegesis is taking into consideration the historical context, political context, and the cultural background that supports the scripture. While doing the task of exegesis, a question to ask is, What was the original intent of the words of what Im reading? We find the answer to this question by doing a little research into the time, culture, political factors, and even the geographical region that surrounds the text you are reading. Exegesis is the opposite of what is known as eisegesis (another scary term), which refers to what I impose on the biblical text from my own interpretation.
  • Hermeneutics is answering the question, How can I interpret this Scripture? How do I apply a contemporary understanding of this text to my life? While Scripture has an eternal relevance about it, this is where we are looking at the here and now. While there was an original audience many years ago, the Bibles words transcend time and space and speak to us today in our contemporary experience. If you want to really get to good hermeneutics, you must start with excellent exegesis. Watch the video to get a 30,000-foot view of what interpretation of scripture is all about.

Writing Your Biblical Study Learning Activity

  • You will continue to use the scripture text that you selected and on which you did your background study and made your observations that led to key themes. When we talk about an interpretation of a Bible passage, we’re talking about how we understand the original meaning of that passage. The same passage of the Bible may be read and understood very differently by various, godly, and reasonable people. In our own lives, it may mean something very different to us when we are older than it did when we were younger – or when we experience a different situation in our life. There is, however, a meaning that the original hearers of the text understood. A text can never mean what it did not mean to its author or those who heard it for the first time. This will be the major research section of the Mastery Assessment Assignment.
  • In this paper, using the biblical text you have been working with, you are now getting at the original meaning of the text. This paper is basically a research paper, not an opinion or reflection paper. Use scholarly resources from the Olivet library, such as the , journal articles, commentaries, and from your course materials. Do not use non-scholarly internet sources, self-published books, or other non-scholarly resources for this assignment. The use of scholarly sources is not about elitism. It is about the accountability of the material that is presented. There is no accountability for accuracy or bias on sites like bible.org as there is in peer-reviewed publications found in Olivet’s library (or the library of other universities). That accountability, accuracy, and objectivity are really important.
  • You will want to answer the following questions:
    • How might the passage have been heard by the first hearers?
    • How have past theologians (historically speaking–Augustine, Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Karl Barth, and others) interpreted this passage?
    • What are the seminal views of this passage from a scholarly view?
  • The more in-depth you can be in this paper, the better. Again, this section of our biblical study will be the most substantial section of your work with no less than 3-4 pages.
