In this Unit, we are learning about federalism, and how we have both federal (national) laws and state laws. (We also have local laws, like specific city or towns, but well focus only the state and federal here). We also learned about the powers of the federal government and the states to make the laws that govern us. In this discussion board, please share your thoughts about this dual system of government.
- What challenges do we see with having both state and federal governments? What are the benefits?
- What kinds of powers state power? Should states be given greater power/jurisdiction over its citizens? Or less?
- Discuss specific examples of where a national government making laws can either benefit or challenge us and US residents and citizens.
Some recent examples include:
– Missouri state legislature passed a state law that declares invalid any federal law that they believe infringe on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
– Texas’s “SB8” abortion restriction law, which has had the effect of outlawing abortion services in Texas
– Supreme Courts recent striking down of OSHAs vaccine or test requirement of private employers with over 100 employees
