• no less than 7 typed paragraphs (i.e., 7 or more paragraphs)
  • evidence of proofreading (e.g., no spelling or punctuation errors, limited grammatical mistakes) – 5 pts
  • required topics you must address:
    1. (1-2 paragraphs) explain how your understanding of chemistry of life and biological macromolecules has changed (i.e., provide specificdetailed examples of your learning that highlight important course topics and common themes) – 5 pts
    2. summarize our course topics by comparing the biological macromolecules we have discussed (i.e., proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids):
      • summarize and describe each of these macromolecules: proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. Dedicate a single paragraph to each macromolecule. You should have four paragraphs dedicated to this requirement  – 4 pts each paragraph (16 pts total)
      • include details of structure and functions of the macromolecule, monomer units, linkages forming the polymer, levels of structure
      • compare and contrast the macromolecules throughout these paragraphs
      • the details you include should represent the characters covered by our textbook and in the video resources (i.e., do not use outside resources)
    3. describe the fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane (why is it called fluid mosaic?).
      • this should be a separate paragraph – 5 pts
      • include the macromolecules that make up the membrane, function of the membrane, chemical characteristics of the membrane.
      • what types of molecules can cross the membrane and which cannot? Give examples.
      • describe the different ways molecules cross the membrane including when proteins and energy are required, be sure to explain diffusion and when active transport is necessary.
    4. integrate the following throughout your essay
      • include all of the following topics: levels of structure (primary, secondary and tertiary structure), types of bonds (ionic, covalent, and hydrogen), polarity, and solubility in water. You should integrate these topics into at least one of your four paragraphs and relate these topics to the macromolecule you discuss in that paragraph  – 5 pts
      • you must use the following terms correctly in these paragraphs: condensation reaction, semi-permeable,    – 2 pts
    5. organize your thoughts by including introductory and concluding paragraphs (i.e., one or both of these paragraphs may overlap with the required paragraphs on learning reflection if there is also evidence of an organized structure to your essay) – 2 pts
    6. use standard formatting (i.e., 12 pt font, 1-1.5 spaced sentences, default margins)
    7. maximum essay length is 3 pages
    8. citations are NOT necessary, but if you need them please use author-date in CSE style. Direct quoting is NOT allowed.
