Performing a rhetorical analysis entails searching a piece of work for the strategies used in order to argue, entertain, inform, etc.  This genre of writing calls you to engage deeply with the text itself and focus on the diction within.  To perform this textual analysis, you are required to analyze a speech and report findings in essay format.  You are to inform your audience of the rhetorical strategies at play and refer frequently to the textual examples in question.
For this assignment, we will focus on two key leaders during the civil rights movement:  Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Both were profound speakers whose oration sparked emotion and motivated people to stand up for their beliefs and fight for justice. You will listen to, read, and analyze one of the speeches below to identify how either speaker uses ethos, pathos, and logos to achieve a central purpose. The thesis statement of your essay should clearly identify your perceived intention behind the speech and the conclusion should declare whether or not that goal was achieved and explore the relevance of the speech (if any) in today’s America.
Speeches:
    • Malcolm X, “Message to the Grass Roots”.   Text
    • Martin Luther King Jr. “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top” Text
Avoid simply summarizing a speech.  While some summary is required, this does not take the place of analysis. Pull quotes from the text to properly identify when and where ethos, pathos, and logos, are present within the speech. Discuss how each mode of persuasion works to help each speaker achieve his purpose. If they do not work properly, state why.
If done properly, you should not use outside sources for this assignment. Concentrate on evidence available through the speech itself rather than depending on another’s analysis.
