Choose one of the following:
- The front page of today’s paper in your local newspaper or a credible national newspaper
- The leading news block in today’s broadcast of a local or national television news program
- A major story in a current issue of a news magazine
- A recent episode of your favorite TV show
Count and compare the total number of gendered sources. Next, compare the backgrounds and identities (like, experts, non-experts, victims, etc.) of male, female, and other sources. If you’re analyzing an entertainment program, adapt these instuctions accordingly to fit your particular program.
Write a one- to two-page reflection. Are there gender discrepancies? In what ways? What about bias? How might the media professionals who created your example have made choices to better represent women? And/or, what choices did they make really well? What can you learn from your analysis to inspire you in your own professional practice? What can you learn that might change your habits as a media consumer? Be sure to consider your example through a lens of fault lines and privilege, also.
If possible, share a link to your example. (If there’s not a link, reference your selection properly and describe it so that I can follow along with you.)
