Your final paper will be a culmination if the work you have done over the course of the semester. You will build on the analysis you did in your interview assignment by adding an introduction, a reflection on the research methods you practiced in class, and an other supplemental materials want to include. Please remember to include a heading and title. See below for a description of the sections you should include:

1. Introduction

What is your project about? Why should readers be interested?

2. Researcher Statement/Positionality

Why did you select this topic?

What is your relationship to the subject, location, people?

What is your status as a researcher (indigenous-insider, indigenous-outsider, external-insider, external-outsider) and why? (It may be helpful to review the video from Week 8 on Researcher Positionality: https://youtu.be/C9wVgU9Ppk8)

3. Literature Review

Take the sources from your summary and write them into a paragraph using APA-style citations. (Review the video on APA format here: https://youtu.be/_fVv2Jt0o18

4. Your Research Question

What is the topic of the interview you conducted? Be sure to discuss your surveys if that is how you chose your research topic.

In this section you should summarize your interview, including who you chose a subject and why, as well as what you hoped to learn from speaking with them.

5. Analysis

Your interview assignment included an analysis that you can use for this section. Review the previous sections (especially the literature review) and decide if anything in your analysis needs additional information.

6. Discussion

Reflect on the work you did this semester and think about the different research methods you practice.

What stands out to you?

Is there a specific method that appeals to you (and why)?

What have you learned?

What did you like/dislike?

Is there something you would change?

7. Supplemental Information (Optional)

Use this section to include anything you think will add to your analysis or discussion. For example: photos or visual aids, background/historical information.

A few parents whose children have attended school during the pandemic were interviewed on the subject matter of how home life was during the pandemic period. Some of the feedback from the parents reflects behaviors and trends that affect several aspects of the home environment.

I interviewed a mother of a 2 and a half year old and a 9 year old who also lives with a domestic partner who is an essential worker. The daily routine includes waking up the children’s father for work, resting for a two hour period, waking up the children, prepare them for their remote learning sessions, prepare the lunches, put the younger child for a nap, preparing dinner for the family while the younger one is taking a nap, and preparing the family for the next day. While the eldest child would be in the room doing her work independently, the younger one requires active participation from the mother. When the father comes home, the mother would proceed to go to the car to sit and relax for about an hour.

When asked how was home life during the pandemic, the feedback was okay at first. The break felt like it was needed in the beginning, but the death tolls started to rise. Fear of the unknown was the feeling and it was amplified by the fact that the mother lives with the children’s father who was described as careless regarding the handling of the pandemic. The mother had underlying health issues, and the youngest child was recovering from the flu.

The self care methods that were used during the pandemic included staying in her car for an hour per day. During periods of quarantine, it was initially fun to not have to wake up very early and avoiding the hustle and bustle of the morning commute. However, after a month has passed, cabin fever started to set in, and the fear of the unknown felt more pronounced. After a month of staying inside, living throughout a pandemic became a major adjustment, and one of the concerns was dealing with an essential worker who not only was careless, but also thought that the pandemic would eventually end without major consequences.

When asked about remote learning, the experiences with the two children are rather diverse. The elder child was very responsible and was able to manage remote learning without much help needed. The elder child also did not desire to go outside anymore and prefers to play games on her gaming systems and computer. The younger child involved some work as the younger one had to endure 15 minute intervals to compensate for not having a great attention span. It was not easy having to move from one screen to another and it got to a point where the mother did not want to be bothered by the remote learning process altogether.

When discussing how the pandemic affected the relationship with the mother and her children, the mother realized that as much as she loves and cares for her children, she needed to maintain a balance of family time and personal time. After spending 6 months with the children alone, she realized that a balance family time and personal time was necessary, and she would not have known how important this is if the children were always at the grandparents’ house on the weekends.
