This week you are learning about how to search the literature and critique research articles which is what you will be doing for your quantitative and qualitative critique papers. Two activities for this week’s discussion.

In your own words explain what a literature review is used for.

Step 1: Read the 2 attached articles and create an Evidence Summary Table for each of the articles (see below). You will upload your responses to Blackboard. I have attached this in a word document as well.

Step 2:
What was the most challenging part of doing this exercise? What would have prepared you to do it better in the future? What article did you find easier to summarize and why?

Step 3: Read the excerpt from a (fictitious) literature review below. Read the excerpt and then answer the questions that follow in a paragraph format:

There is now abundant research evidence that pregnant adolescents are at especially high risk of pregnancy complications, of having low-birth-weight infants, and of neonatal deaths (Brown, 2006; Hillard, 1999; Travis, 2010). Relatively few researchers, however, have examined the health of children born to adolescent mothers after the first few weeks of life. The limited data that are available suggest that children of young mothers continue to be at a disadvantage throughout their infancy and later childhood. For example, Bradley and Lewis (2011) studied the health records from clinic visits of over 1000 infants, and reported that the health of infants born to teenaged mothers was worse than that for infants of older mothers; particular problems were noted with respect to the incidence of hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, pneumonia, and seizures. Hughes (2012), in her in-depth study of 20 young-parent families, reported that the infants experienced extensive health problems, with many having been hospitalized by the time they were 18 months old. According to Tilmon (2013), “These young women are simply not capable of attending to the needs of their children until their health problems are so severe they require hospitalization” (p. 315).

Other investigators have proved that accidents and injuries are more prevalent among infants born to teenaged mothers. For example, Wright (2011) reported that the risk of infant accidental death was highest among mothers between 15 and 19 years of age. Similarly, Kestecher and Dickinson (2009) found that the most important difference in the health status of 3-year-old children with teenaged versus older mothers was the high incidence of injuries and burns to those children with young mothers.

Few empirical studies have attempted to unravel the factors that might lead to impaired health among the children born to younger mothers. The purpose of this study was to further explore the factors that might lead to greater health problems and less appropriate use of health care among children born to adolescent mothers.

Short-Answer Questions (MAKE SURE TO EXPLAIN YOUR RESPONSES AS THIS IS A DISCUSSION SO SIMPLY STATING YES/NO IS NOT ACCEPTABLE; IF YOU BELIEVE AN ARTICLE IS QUANTITATIVE EXPLAIN USING CITATIONS WHY YOU BELIEVE THIS)

a. Is this literature review likely to be thorough and up to date?

b. Does this review cite quantitative research, qualitative research, or both?

c. In this literature review, what would be considered the independent variable in the studies reviewed?

d. In this literature review, what would be considered the dependent variables in the studies reviewed? Explain your answer

e. Is there a sentence in the second paragraph that is inappropriate and should be removed or reworded? Explain your answer

f. Are all of the references to research reports, or does it appear that other materials were used in the review? Meaning are all the references here research articles?

Step 4: Essay Questions

a. Identify key words that you would use to search for literature on the same topic. Explain why you chose these terms.

When responding to your peers this week, provide feedback comparing your answers with other students and learning from one another. Provide rationales for why you answered some of these questions in both exercises the way you did and seeing how another students might have differed or was similar to your own.

Discussion Protocol. Please observe the following 3 x 3 rule: when writing your weekly discussions (applies to the original discussion posting): – A minimum of three paragraphs per DQ. Each paragraph should have a minimum of three sentences. All sections of the question need to be addressed. Remember that peer responses need to be substantive and extend the original discussion posting by making connections, relating to others’ ideas and adding supporting detail. Refer to grading rubric, to receive full credit each portion of the discussion posting must be addressed along with the 2 peer responses. The 2 peer responses must be substantive and add something to the original posts and should be a minimum of 4-5 sentences but can certainly be longer.

All answers or discussions comments submitted must be in APA format according to Publication Manual American Psychological Association (APA) (7th ed.) 2019.

Discussions must have a minimum of two references, not older than 2015. First post by Wednesday 11:59 PM weekly and respond to two peers by Sunday 11:59 weekly.
