Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, by offering one or more additional mitigation strategies or further insight into your colleagues assessment of big data opportunities and risks.

Technology is ever evolving in the world today, especially in the medical field. Data use can improve patient care in many ways. One of the major improvements is the amount of time that is saved from transitioning from the old ways of paper charts to utilizing electronic medical records. Using electronic medical records also aids in providers being able to assess patient information from multiple locations and telehealth communications as well as engaging the patient in their health care which improves patient outcomes.

Glassman gives ideal examples of how using big data as a part of a clinical system is a benefit, such as middleware, which is a device that links patients monitoring to the nurses device. (p.47, 2017) This is a benefit because it can give real time, direct information that is vital to accurate, fast, and efficient patient care. However, there still can be challenges with this benefit. Such challenges are the costs of the machines (along with potential damages, replacement cost, parts, labor, etc.), complications of communication between devices, and issues revolving around who owns the data. (Huston, 2013) The article Big Data Means Big Potential, Challenges for Nurse Execs discusses how its important to have the data that is being collected, but that all of the data collected also needs to be analyzed and used to come up with solutions/programs, which can be an enormous task. (2016)

A way to help with the challenges of utilizing technology and data that were mentioned previously would be use devices that are cost effective, sturdy as to not be easily broken, and potentially have someone on staff that is able to troubleshoot any IT issues that may come up. There will always be challenges and issues that come up that are unforeseeable but having a plan to address issues as they arise in a timely, effective manner can be half the battle.

Hi Erin,

As you stated technology is constantly evolving to meet incoming demands from an

everchanging healthcare market. After reading your post about middleware I did some research about this software since it was my first time hearing about it. Middleware is now in the third application, due to previously identified obstacles, such as lack of standardized information. (n.d., 2021)

Some of the new upgrades are real-time data changes in patients delivered directly into

Nurses devices. This proves effective in monitoring a patients condition. By providing nurses with their own electronic devices the hospital ensures the correct use of IT technology in inpatient care since the use of mobile phones at work enhances clinical performance and improves patient care. (Bautista, 2016)
