As you learned in your reading this week (Enelow & Kursmark, 2010), cover letters are an essential part of any job search. Its the first document that a prospective employer will see, and in a competitive job search market, first impressions are everything. You must do all you can to present yourself well. In this discussion activity, we are going to follow two of Enelow and Kursmarks steps to give you a jump-start on your written assignment for this week.
Lets Talk
Begin by identifying a job you think you would like to have after you graduate from College. This could be the job you currently have, or it could be a totally different job. It doesnt have to be in your specific discipline (degree program). The choice is up to you. At a minimum, however, you must answer the following questions in your response:
- What is the specific job title?
- What is the company name?
- What is the hiring managers name and title?
Enelow and Kursmark (2010) identified a six-step writing process to craft an effective cover letter. The first step is to identify your key selling points. You did at least some of that when you crafted your elevator pitch in M2.3. In your initial response, you will address Steps Two and Three of Enelow and Kursmarks (2010) process, as outlined below.
Step Two is to Pre-Plan. In this step, you must answer the following questions:
- Why are you writing this letter?
- What do you know about the company?
- What do you know about the position?
- Who is the contact person? What do you know about him/her?
Step Three is to Write the Opening Paragraph. In this step, you must answer the following questions:
- Who are you?
- Why are you writing?
- What message are you communicating?
You will find it helpful to use a Q&A format to respond to this discussion activity. That approach will help you ensure that you address all 10 of the required questions.
