For this assignment, you will evaluate your skills and identify your personal areas of strength and areas of opportunity in your work with young children. Open your Core Body of Knowledge and skim the competencies that are expected of all professionals in the field of early childhood education. In this module, we will focus on section 6. Professionalism and Leadership, starting at p.71-78, the planning tool begins on page 89. These are the Core Competencies, but be sure to read the related behaviors and skills which are subcategories under each core competency.

Please include the following topics in your assignment:
- Describe your personal goals.
- Describe the overall core competencies for Professionalism and Leadership. What are the recommended practices for professionals? Give examples from your experience and/or the assigned readings (be sure to cite).
- Select one competency for an in-depth analysis of your personal areas of strength, steady progress, or areas of opportunity. (Be sure explain at least 2 examples of behaviors and skills for each or a combined total of 6). For example, you might select 6.1 Uses and follows all relevant ethical standards and professional guidelines. Perhaps you are not familiar with the education requirements for the position you’d like to have (6.1a), or you have never heard of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct (6.1d) so these are areas of opportunity for you. Now that you know where you are lacking in a little professional knowledge, what will you do about it?
- Share at least 2 examples of areas of opportunity from above where you want to increase your knowledge base. Hint: We will learn about the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct in the next module, or you can study something you’d like to learn in future assignments. Set goals, be specific.
Since we are just beginning this course (and likely your degree at ESC), it’s expected that you will have a lot of areas of opportunity. That’s okay! Use this assignment to think about your personal goals, what it means to be a professional within this field, and set some goals.
