The responsibility of raising a child from birth is one of the great challenges of life. For this project, students will take the role of the “guardian angel” for a couple who have just had their first child and need to know what to do to raise the child for the first several years of his/her life. The couple is Kenny and Teresa, who are both in their mid-twenties and just had a baby. This project will be a series of letters where the “parents” ask the “guardian angel” questions about child development and then the “guardian angel” responds back with research-informed advising. The assignment will involve the parents and guardian angel exchanging letters back and forth with one another throughout the baby’s early childhood years.
Your presentation is expected to include the following:
- Students will act in the parent role by writing a letter to the guardian angel, asking for some guidance on a specific topic that is relevant for the stage that the baby is in (i.e., infant feeding issues, infant sleeping issues, separation anxieties, going to preschool, tantrums, general expectations, etc.). Then students will respond to that letter as the guardian angel, sharing research-informed answers/advising. Students will do this exchange a total of 6 times. Therefore, students will write 6 letters from the parents to the guardian angel, and 6 response letters from the guardian angel back to the parents. A total of 12 letters.
- The letters should address several of the common issues a couple might experience when raising their first child. The first letter from the parents should be immediately after the birth and the last letter should be when the child is around the age of three.
- The letters may vary in length. At least 4 sentences for each letter as the “parents” and as the “guardian angel”. This can be done in a paragraph form or bullets
- This powerpoint presentation should be at least 14 slides (at least 12 slides of content and 1 title slide and 1 reference slide). Please remember to include APA in-text citations on each slide (just as would be required for an essay) for all information that is gathered from outside sources.
