Tatum and other scholars assert that racial socialization occurs at a very young age.  Kids are not born with racial attitudes and ideas but rather are taught these things. We learn from our parents, peers, schooling, and media.  

For this assignment, view the following video which explores the famous Clark doll test. What are kids being taught about race? What is your overall reaction to the video? What can we as a society do to help develop positive messages about race to kids? Write a half-page  reaction.

Sphere of Influence-Being Anti-Racist

Tatum suggests that we all have a “sphere of influence,” that is, we all have a circle of influence that we can impact in a positive way. Some folks, like celebrities, might have a larger sphere but we all can do things to activetly fight against racism, to be anti-racist. At the center of everyone’s sphere is ourselves, being anti-racist is not all about fighting societal injustices it also includes exploring our own ideas and actions in terms of race. 

For this assignment provide a list of  10 things (bullet format) that you can do to impact your “sphere of influence” in a positive way in terms of race. How can you be actively anti-racist?  I have provided 2 examples below, you cannot use these in your assignment.

1. I can read a book that develops my understanding of racial issues. 

2. I can join an organization or group that focuses on racial justice.
