Please read chapter 4 (Paul Ricoeur), chapter 5 (Jean-Luc Marion), and St. Dinoysius’s “Mystical Theology” and answer the questions
1) Ricoeur identifies two main types of truth he sees as operative in the human experience. What are these two types of truth and what are their characteristics? How in particular do these truths function with respect to religion for Ricoeur? In what ways is Ricoeur’s approach to truth both an acceptance of Freud’s critiques of religion but also a response to them?
2) Jean-Luc Marion and St. Dionysius emphasize the mystical unknowability of God. You should recall that Hume, Freud, and Feuerbach all maintained that if you take this approach, you might as well be an atheist. After reading about Marion–and especially St. Dionysius who inspired Marion’s thought–how do you feel about their argument? To what extent can you see where they are coming from and why? To what extent do you think they were missing key elements (and why)?
