Take-home reading assignment 2 (10%):

(For due date see syllabus)

Write two summaries and a concluding paragraph for the following two texts:

– Clemencon, Is sustainable development bad for global biodiversity conservation?

– Gupta, The puzzle of the global commons or the tragedy of inequality: revisiting Hardin.

NOTE: the first article is written by me but treat it as you would treat any other reading assignment.

For each of the two texts:

– Capture the key argument you believe the author makes in your own words.

– Highlight one or two facts or examples the author mentions in support of the overall argument. Concluding discussion:

– Write a final concluding section discussing both texts in relation to each other and hitting on some themes covered so far in class. How do the two texts link up with each other? In what ways do they overlap, in what ways do they differ in focus?

Structure: your essay will have three parts:

– 2 short summaries (300-500 words each),

– 1 final concluding paragraph (300-500 words)

Length: Your essay in total should be between 1000 and 1500 words. Individual sections can be shorter or longer. Try to stick to the word count. If you end up above it, delete, rephrase, condense, consolidate. It will make your writing better. For reference, this prompt is 500 words long.

Follow these general guidelines:

– Put your name at the top of the page.

– Note word count in the upper right corner of the page.

– Put the full bibliographical reference as section header at the top of each summary (hint: you can cut and paste from syllabus).

Style:

– Clearly organize your argument, avoid repetition.

– Avoid statements like “I agree with the author” without explaining why.

– Generally, avoid fillers like “I think” “I believe”. This is your analysis; it is understood that what you write is your take on these readings.

Citations:

One of the most widely used citation style in the social sciences is from the American Psychological Association (APA): http://www.bibme.org/citation-guide/apa/. But you can use another generally accepted style, just be consistent.

Use direct quotes very sparingly and generally paraphrase in your own words. When you use a direct quote, reference it with page number. Such as: Gupta points out that “the sky is often but not always blue” (p. 2). Grading: You will be graded on

– your ability to succinctly identify key issues addressed by the authors,

– thoughtfulness of your comparative analysis

– organization, clarity of writing, and grammar
