On atheistic religions

Consider that some of the major philosophical traditions in Indian thought (specifically Buddhism and Jainism) can also be regarded as world religions that are atheistic.  That is, these are religious systems which deny the existence of God (at least as the term “God” has been understood in traditional Western thought).  How necessary is the concept of God (as say a personal, supreme being) to the viability of religion?  In other words, must the concept be present in a strong, lively way for a religion to be legitimate?  If not, what does that say about how we should define religion?

On what the Upanishads regard of as the good life

Is Schlitz’s reading(TWO CHARIOTS: THE JUSTIFICATION OF THE BEST LIFE IN THE KATHA UPANISHAD AND PLATO’S PHAEDRUS)

Elizabeth A. Schiltz

interpretation of how the Katha Upanishad justifies the good life (in opposition to the life of sense pleasures) plausible?  In particular, does the “internal” way of thinking of the individual that Schlitz says is proposed in this Upanishad sound like something that can make sense to and apply to everyone (even, say, to the one who only wants to “live it up” and party all the time)?  What are points from the article that support your conclusion?

· RELIGION: A MOST PERSONAL AND INDIVIDUAL DECISION

With this said, I intensely hold to the belief that we each have the right, if not responsibility, to decide each our own path as it relates to religion.  More than constitutionally or religiously, even as some have preached of my faith, my core belief commands I do unto others as I would have them do unto me.Further, as I have researched for this discussion, I see my definition of atheist leans definitively more towards the agnostic definition, which I do not use synonymously with atheist.   So for purposes of this discussion, I am addressing the question of agnostic religions and decidedly not the extreme other end of the spectrum that some in/of my faith have called… devil worshippers.   Yes, people have a right to chose the devil or d=evil, I just do not want to talk about them.

So, on the agnostic question of religion with no belief in god, I believe Buddhism beautifully exemplifies this to the affirmative.  Again, while this not my path, it is a path, none the less.

On Atheistic religions

There is controversy in the subject. as there are many definitions of religion. It has been a pleasure exploring the roles of the Heterodox Alternatives of Jainism and Buddhism to help strengthen this discussion. I would argue that belief in one’s source – God – is a choice that an individual has to make; but that this choice may be well-versed by family and community upbringing.

. Therefore, the process of viability when it comes religion, especially if an individual never questions the concept of its religious practices or rituals, confers its legitimacy as a social structure in order to remain intact.

· When psychology meets philosophy

When psychology meets philosophy, Elizabeth Schlitz’s interpretation of how the Katha Upanishad justifies the good life as an internal way of thinking – yet she  answers the philosophical problem. The Katha Upanishad and Plato’s Phaedrus Charioteers’ justification of the good life moves to psychology. However, she argues, “especially the justification, of the best life is a philosophical issue that is central to Plato’s work, and one that he takes up in many dialogues: the definitional dialogues, the Gorgias, the Republic, the Phaedrus, etc.” Comparatively speaking, each provide an image of Self as a chariot in which ethical behavior is determined on the basis of a breakdown of a person’s nature and purpose “toward an effective justification of the best life” (462). The use of wisdom can only be arrived through the act of Self-control. As an individual, the challenge of a life spent in pursuit of sense pleasures is not amendable to achieving one’s ultimate purpose in favor of life spent in pursuit of wisdom.

Upanishads…

After reading the Upanishads I got to see and understand that Vedas was a part of the Upanishads who was one of the oldest religious text in the world. Which I didn’t know about, and I like to believe that I’m a firm believer when it comes to my religion and trying to know a little knowledge on my background and others religion preference.  Well, I got to see how the Upanishads represent a shift in the ancient Indian mind toward purely abstract and philosophical thought of the self. When it came to the Upaniṣads, they were actually composed in a ritual context, yet they mark their reasoning. I enjoyed reading how they reflected on the nature of being, the nature of the self, and the foundation of life. When it came to self, I got to see how Yajnavalkya believed in “Self Realization”. He felt as ” Gods and creatures confuse those who regard them as separate from the self”… No one can understand the sounds of a drum without understanding both the drum and drummer;”. (10 Line 4.6-4.8) So, there is where I believe ones of the Upanishads felt as the good life was a reflection of the SELF. They always wanted to know what happens to the self at the time of death etc, and always finding ways of interacting with others. As such, the Upaniṣads are often considered to be the fountainhead and varied philosophical tradition in India. Overall, I enjoyed this reading and really would like to read more so I can get a even better understanding. What are you insights?
