“As theinternet evolved and technology made the world of information more accessible, intellectual property (IP) became harder to protect. IP and its protection areimportant to many music artists and those in the entertainment industry. In thelate 90s, with the emergence of Napster and other file sharing apps and websites, piracy of music became mainstream.

In 1999, at the height of the dot-com boom, a 19-year-oldcollege dropout named Shawn Fanning introduced Napster, a website that allowedusers to share digital music files for free. Needless to say, this disruptedthe business model that musicians and the recording industry relied on. Napstersupporters argued that the industry needed to wake up and embrace the DigitalAge (Regan, 2021, p.1).

Musicartists have a right to be compensated for their work as any other profession, but due to the ease of piracy many violators of copyright laws do so from thecomfort of their home with little technical knowhow. Before the cell phoneevolved beyond being a communication device and became a smart phone, manydepended on their iPods or M3 players to listen to their downloadedmusic.  These devices were not originally Wi-Fi enabled and requiredsynching or manual file transfers. What helped with the reducing the piracy ofmusic was the evolution of mobile devices? Phones that were once used mainly ascommunication tools are now also entertainment devices for playing music andvideos. Mobile devices such as phones and tablets can now connect to theinternet through 4G and 5G technology and stream anywhere in which they havereception. These devices can run apps and GPS systems, access the Internet, send text messages and photos, and stream music and videos (Lawrence &Weber, 2019, p.246). The music industry has helped quell piracy due to onlinedownloading services. The music industrys solution, eventually, wasdigital downloads, in particular iTunes, which allowed consumers to purchasemusic by the track rather than by the album (Schumacher-Rasmussen, 2014, p.4).Although music artists are not as well compensated through streaming services, many realize this is the way the industry has evolved and is the excepted norm.Streaming services are worse for artists than iTunes or physical media, butalmost every one of them is on Spotify, however reluctantly(Schumacher-Rasmussen, 2014, p.4). The convenience of streaming has reduced theamount of music piracy not because people  feel piracy is wrong, butbecause it is easier to subscribe and stream than it is to download andtransfer an MP3 file. The movie and TV industry has also shifted to streamingservices. The ease of streaming has reduced piracy in music, movies and tvshows. Copyrighted music and media should be protected, but giving easier legaloptions such as streaming services seem to be more effective.

Inconclusion piracy is wrong and most people will agree that stealing is wrong. The Bible tells us, Thou shalt not steal (King James Bible, 1769/2017, Exodus20:15). Even though many people believe stealing is wrong, some may not viewmusic piracy as invasive as physical property theft. Many consumers aredismissive of the legality of pirated music and movies. According to an articleby Pew research, Consumers argue, in some news reports, that downloadingsimply supplements their regular music purchasing habits or serves as a form ofsampling new music (Lenhart, A., & Madden, 2003, p.1). As technology evolves, the music industry has to make sure doing the right thing such as streaming anddigital purchases is easier than pirating music. When piracy becomes easierthan legal options,  it is harder to dissuade against it and protect anartists intellectual property.
