INSTRUCTIONS
Research Question Development, Citations, and Literature Review Outline (50 Points)
DUE [End of Week 9] 11:59PM
Before you embark on upon this assignment, you should have first completed the library tutorial and APA citation style very well from previous course content.
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to prepare you to embark upon your research paper, which is a 4-page informational literature review.
There is no “prompt” for either this assignment or your literature review, but your topic must include (a) a type of media, and (b) an investigation of the effects of that media type on a particular audience. This is not about a piece of technology, but rather, about investigating the effects of media on certain audiences. This is a “first step” into social science inquiry. This assignment will first help you develop what is called a “research question.” Then, complete the research and provide your APA-style reference list. The third step of this assignment is to organize the information into “literature review” form. This document walks you through this step-by-step, and you should use this document as your template – don’t create one of your own! Follow the directions carefully and ask your instructor for further guidance if needed.
Steps

USE THIS DOCUMENT AS YOUR TEMPLATE. Follow along and complete the information as instructed in each section.
Replace the running header at the top right with your own last name.
Be sure you complete all three parts of the assignment.

Points Distribution
Part I: Preliminary Questions, 5 Points
Part II: Research Material Cited in APA Style, 35 Points
Part III: Literature Review Research Outline, 10 Points
Total: 50 Points
The number of points awarded for the successful completion of each section are provided. There is no separate rubric for this assignment. Detailed points for each section are described at each step in this document.
Student Questions
If you have questions about this assignment, please be sure to ask in class, as I often clarify student questions at that time. The last date I will answer inquiries via email about this assignment is 5pm, 3 days prior to the due date. Like you, I have multiple competing deadlines and must manage my time accordingly. Therefore, be sure your read the instructions well before the due date so that you can come to me with questions in a timely matter.
NOTE TO ONLINE STUDENTS: If you are taking this course online and there is no live lecture or Q/A sessions, be sure to contact your instructor well in advance!

The three parts to this assignment begin on the next page.

Part I: Research Question Development (5 points total)
COMPLETE EACH ITEM BELOW. I HAVE PROVIDED HELPFUL EXAMPLES IN BLUE.

What type of media will you focus on? Be specific. Don’t just say “social media” or “movies,” for example. Good examples: Political advertisements; country music videos; Celebrity Instagram feeds; horror movies; crime dramas; hip hop music lyrics. (1 pt)

What is your target demographic you are interested in for this research? Narrow your target demographic by AT LEAST TWO of the following categories: gender, age range, developmental stage, race or ethnicity. Examples: Teenage girls age 13-16; African American men in their 20s; Children age 7-10.
(1 pt; .5 pt if only one category is named)

What media effect will you be investigating in relation to this target audience? Examples: Depression; gender role expectations; attitudes toward violence; fright reactions; attitudes toward dating; political attitudes. (1 pt)

Based on the answers to the above 3 questions, write your research question in one sentence. That is, state what you will be researching in the form of a question.
Your research question must address (a) the type of media and the target demographic you identified above, and (b) the effect you described above. Your research question must include those elements to get 2 points.

Good Examples (and yes, if one of these happens to be your actual area of interest, you can use these!):

What effect does the beauty marketing industry have on the self-esteem of tween girls age 9-12?
Does playing violent video games affect adolescent boys’ perceptions of violence?
Does negative political advertising affect cynicism among young adult voters?
How has marketing efforts for vaping affected college students’ use of vaporizers/ e-cigs?

Type your research question below:
(2 pts; can range from .5 – 2 pts depending on completeness)

Part II: Research Material Cited in APA Style (35 points total)
Provide an APA style reference list of 10 academic sources consisting of (a) peer-reviewed academic journal articles, (b) academic books, and/or (c) chapters from academic books that could potentially be used to investigate your research question.
You will get a total of 35 points as long as all of the following requirements are met:

The list contains a proper APA style heading: References (1 pt if correct, 0 if not)
The list is in alphabetical order (2 pts if correct, 0 if not, regardless of severity)
Spacing and indentations are correct throughout (2 if correct, 0 if not, regardless of severity)
Author listings should be according to APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)
Publication dates should be according to APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)
Titles of chapters and/or journal articles should be according to APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)
Titles of books and/or journals should be according to APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)
Publisher information should be included only as appropriate to the source type, and in exact accordance with APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)
Volume numbers and page numbers are listed as appropriate to the source type, and in exact accordance with APA style (Half-point deduction for each citation that is incorrect, up to all 10)

PLEASE NOTE: It is not expected that your final reference list in your final paper will match this list, or that the citations in the outline (Step 3) will match with your final paper. Research is an iterative (repeated, ongoing, cyclical) process, and it is highly likely and very normal to find new or different material between the “draft stage” (which is what you’re in now) and the “final product!”

INSERT YOUR APA REFERENCE LIST BELOW
References

Part III: Literature Review Research Outline (10 points total)
READ CAREFULLY!
For this section, KEEP the words in BLACK as they are – do not modify them.
You only need to modify the words that are in BLUE. The words in blue describe what you should insert there. Modify them to fit your topic! You will need to have read at least the abstracts or summaries of each source in order to categorize them into this outline. Points for each item are indicated below. REMEMBER: RETAIN THE FORMATTING I HAVE PROVIDED, replacing only the information in blue (keep the blue type, too – it helps us when grading!).
