Directions: Write a 500-750 word paper (not including the title page and reference page) on a topic related to resilience.
This is your first full-length paper. Your grade on this paper will directly reflect your ability to incorporate the writing concepts that you have studied so far. Please note the following:
Your paper must be narrowed down to ONE topic. The topic of the paper should be evident in the first or second sentence of the paper.
For example, if the topic is Challenges of Resilience, the opening sentence or two should explicitly mention that topic. Do not work up to your topic with a flowery intro. Get straight to the point.
Your main idea should be expressed in the thesis (or topic) statement, which comes at the end of the introduction paragraph. Your thesis should make an argument or take a stance on the topic you selected.
A good thesis takes a stance on the topic of the paper and provides 2-3 rationales. It makes an actual argument about the topic.
The body of your paper should focus ONLY on the arguments presented in the thesis.
Each paragraph must begin with a topic sentence. The topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph will discuss. Think of it as a “mini thesis.” To formulate your topic sentence, refer back to your original thesis in the introduction. Break your main thesis up to create a mini-thesis for the paragraph.
The rest of the paragraph should be narrowly focused on providing evidence to support the topic sentence. Do not state your opinion. Do not provide examples from your own experience to support your thesis. Be sure to write in an unbiased tone.
Do not write in the first person.
Your conclusion should restate the main points of the paper. Do not introduce new topics.
You must provide at least three references, 2 of which must be peer-reviewed within five years. Do not use your textbook for scholarly support of your thesis.
As always, no late papers are accepted in this course.
Papers that fail to meet the minimum word count will not be accepted. Papers that exceed the word count will be accepted, but points will be deducted.
