In his 2012 review of the new Islamic art galleries at New York’s Met museum, Nasser Rabbat gives us a balance sheet of the curators’ successes and failures. He also makes a case for the inclusion of the term “Islamic” in the name of the galleries. In your assignment, you will evaluate Rabbat’s key claims about the galleries, the displays within them, and the framing of those displays. To get you started, consider the following questions: How does Rabbat argue and with what evidence? Is his argument convincing or not, and why? And, finally, why does the name of the Met’s galleries matter so much for him, and for the Met’s public?

Your response should be 2 – 3 pages, 12 pt. font, double-spaced. The best papers will make a clear and consistent argument. This means you should start with a thesis and support that thesis by drawing on the details of Rabbat’s text.
