Now that you are in the final section of your writing, in this assignment you will:

1) compare the object (that you have written on so far) with another work of art of your choice — the comparison will address how the two objects relate/differ in terms of content, form and context, and you will use visual details to support a clear argument about why these two objects can be an informing comparison; you should not address each object on its own, but engage with a truly comparative method that always looks at the comparison as a whole.

2) summarize your work so far, including your parts on content, form, context and comparison, and make a final effort in interpreting your object — while the key assumption is that a visual object is also an object of information and knowledge, your final job is to arrive at a clear argument about what type of information and knowledge is legible in the object of your choice.

Note:

This will be a fully constructed essay that should consist of six to eight pages in length (double spaced, standard margin, 12-point Times New Roman font). You will merge your previous parts into this essay NOT as independent sections but as a coherent flow of materials that are organized according to a clear structure — while five points will be given to the quality of your comparison&interpretation, another five points will be given to the overall quality of your essay. (please refer to the grading rubric below). You should not divide your essay into separate parts with individual titles such as "content&form, context," and so on, neither should you simply copy and paste your previous work into the file, which will constitute self-plagiarism.

Although there is no definite formula for a successful art historical essay, as a whole your final submission should:

1) introduce the object of your choice, including its content, form, and context

2) relate the issues of content, form and context to each other

3) compare these issues with those of another object and arrive at a clear argument about their similarity/difference

4) present a clear thesis about "what this object tells me about itself, its maker, and the time of its origin."
