M1 Completion Assignment Overview

Part 1 – Chapter 1: Dance as an Art Form (25 points)

    1. What similarities are there between the rituals of primitive societies and rituals that we have in today’s society? Make sure to provide specific examples to support your reasoning. Hint: Think of some of the reasons why primitive people danced. (5 points)
    2. Your text discussed The Rite of Spring as being a very controversial dance when it was first performed in 1913, but today it is held in high regard as an outstanding work of art. What other famous work of art can you think of that was not readily accepted by the society in which it was created, but held in high regard years later? Why was the artwork controversial and not accepted at that time? What do you think the artist was trying to communicate? What is your aesthetic response to the work of art? (15 points)
    3. What do you think is meant by the final statement in your text: "…an audience’s response to a dance says as much about the audience as it does the dance"? (5 points)

The lights fade, and the curtain begins to rise….

What is your aesthetic response to the work as the viewer in 1913? What similarities do you see between this dance and what primitive dance may have looked like? (Hint: Refer to your text and think about relationships, spatial patterns, costuming, the stage space, etc.) What famous dance company recreated this dance? When did this recreation take place? How many years later was the recreation from the original work?
