Methodology
This research study is qualitative in nature and utilizes a multiple-case design. According to Patton (2015), a qualitative approach is appropriate when the researcher wishes to examine “the phenomenon of interest to get detailed, descriptive data and perceptions about the variations in what goes on and the implications of those variations for the people and processes involved” (p. 6). This approach is valuable for education and social science research to understand phenomenon in a social context. It is the best approach that provided deep and detailed understanding of the reasons why homeschooled affect the social skills of children. differently than those in public schools. Thus, A case study is an appropriate choice of methodology for the purpose of this exploratory study seeking to know the effect of homeschooling on social skills. Because the focus is on individual children, this study is holistic in nature (Yin, 2014, pp. 62–63). Using multiple cases yields robust results and adds a degree of validity to the study (Yin, 2014), making holistic multiple case design an appropriate choice for this study.
Procedures
This will be a multiple participant qualitative case study that includes six children who are active homeschooled. The following were delimitations of this study
- The participants are homeschooling students.
- The participants will be three girls and three boys.
- The participant’s ages will be among (13-15) years.
Multiple participant case studies, according to Yin (2003), allow a researcher to draw conclusions from groups of cases. Thus, the six cases collectively strengthen the results and increase confidence in the study (Tellis, 1997). Will use multiple data collection methods including observation, in-depth semi-structured interviews face to face or online meetings. A hallmark of case study research is the use of multiple data sources, a strategy that also enhances data credibility (Patton, 2015; Yin, 2003). Will be data from these sources is coded and grouped in categories and themes in order to be combined in the analysis process and not handled individually with each piece contributing to the researcher’s understanding of the whole phenomenon (Baxter & Jack, 2008). Furthermore, social constructivism was the theoretical framework that framed analysis and interpretation of the data. All six participants will be homeschooled students. The researcher will seek to investigate a subgroup whose experiences are likely to be the same (Polkinghorn, 2005).
