Find in the media a presentation of research published in the past twelve months that describes a relationship between variables. The best place to find these statements is media outlets (e.g., Time Magazine, CNN, USAToday, BBC, Fox News, etc.) Writing your paper requires three steps:
- Summarize the major finding of the research.
- Present explanations of the finding other than that there is a causal relationship at work—that the relationship might be correlational but not causal. For example, note factors that may vary with both the independent and dependent variable and that may account for the finding and/or explain how there may be reverse-causality.
- Lay out a research design that would allow one to determine whether there is a causal relationship. In other words, present the design of a new study that could resolve whether the independent variable causes the dependent variable. Think about what I said about what allows us to determine causal relationships.
A tip on finding an article:
I just googled “Study finds” and set the search tools to the last 24 hours. This was one of the top returns: https://www.fourstateshomepage.com/news/national/sibling-bullying-linked-to-poor-mental-health-years-later-study-finds/. That would be an excellent article for this paper. An important point: the article doesn’t have to claim a relationship is causal. It also might describe a study with sufficient controls to establish that the relationship is in fact causal. You don’t have to work about any of those things. You just need to find the relationship, in this case the link between sibling bullying and mental health, and then follow the three steps for the paper laid out above.
