Your report will allow you to make connections with some of the broader issues of global political economy through a local case example – TATA Steel Port Talbot. The uncertainty surrounding TATA is a reflection of global issues. Your report must explore the global challenges and potential local impacts. Further advice is provided below – see I. Assessment Criteria, II. Additional Guidance for report structure and III. report content is included below.

In no more than 1000 words address the following:

(i) Describe the global challenges TATA Steel Port Talbot are facing in relation to managing people and organisation in the UK. For this section you may for example explain any global political and economic issues that inform TATAs decisions and

(ii) Explain how these challenges may impact employees and the wider (local) community by applying at least two of the concepts covered on the module. For example you can consider how uncertainty might impact local understandings of business, work and organisation (Eg. communities of practice or cosmopolitanism/localism might be included – see II. Additional Guidance below).

II. Additional Guidance – Report Structure:

Your report should have an introduction that explains the areas you will address in your report. In the introduction you might describe TATA Steel, its business model and the challenges that specifically impact Port Talbot. You may also very briefly state the two areas that your work will focus on (see III. Additional Content Guidance for what to select). Please limit the words here to around 100. Use the majority of words to explain the detail in nature of employment and the challenges and impacts sections.

In describing the global challenges TATA Steel Port Talbot are facing in relation to managing people and organisation in the UK you are encouraged to Discuss TATA as an employer in the UK. For example, e.g., consider what kind of staff the firm employs, where does it recruit from and how are the workers managed. You should identify pay and working conditions, employee skill levels and the labour market for the work undertaken at Port Talbot. Remember there are numerous skills, trades and contractors employed directly and indirectly by TATA. Try to limit this to around 350 words.

For the second point (ii) in explaining how these challenges may impact employees and the wider (local) community you need to pick two of the concepts covered on the module which may show how uncertainty might impact local understandings of business, work and organisation.

Here for example you might want to explain TATA’s approach to employing contractors, it’s relations with the community, unions, The State, the business that rely on the plant. Remember that these are examples, i.e., you need not select any of these. As you will be introduced to a variety of concepts on the module each week you will be able to select the areas you are most interested in. When you have made your decision be clear to explain why you this particular issue is important in relation to TATA Port Talbot. Try to limit this to around 550 words.

Your conclusion will be a very brief summary of the key global aspects of organisation associated with TATA Port Talbot that you have analysed in your report. It can be around 50 words.

III. Additional Guidance – Report Content:

Each week of the course we focus on key areas that you may wish use in your assignment. For example in week two we talk about the family firm. You may wish to reflect on how thinking here may impact on decisions made within TATA steel.

Other ideas could be:

 Community: what changes have been experienced in the local community, what changes might be anticipated?

 Family: Is this a family run business, do employees feel part of a family and are their elements of family life in the business. It may be that families help shield us from some of the worst excesses of global capitalism, but again, families may also be the source of distance from community.

 Outlook: do people look out to what is happening in the world beyond the community or are they inward focused. How might outlook and uncertainty impact local understandings of business, work and organisation, what might be the impacts for people and work?

The important point is that you need to link the case to what we study in class. You need to incorporate theory and practice, so select the areas that you are most interested in producing your report which shows your knowledge and understanding of theory as well as application.

So how to begin …….

To begin, read the article attached from the Guardian. The continuing TATA steel uncertainty is covered by the media on a daily basis, finding lots of news stories that focus on TATA Steel is guaranteed. What we would like you to do is to be careful with the sources you use to show wider reading and evidence of developing knowledge and understanding. Try to use appropriate academic sources such as academic journal articles, and book chapters; government sources and official websites (such as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, CIPD); and reputable newspapers.

Remember you have probably worked out that newspapers often have a particular ideological orientation so that you will find articles in the Guardian and Independent to be more sympathetic to staff and critical of senior management, other newspapers (for example the Telegraph and the Times) may take a very different view.
