Key assignment: This is a reflective analysis of the work you’ve completed this semester. You will return to your journal entries, peer responses, and to your Synthesized Rhetorical Analysis and Research Essay, in order to gather material for the content of this analysis. Autoethnography requires you to compose a narrative of your engagement with, process through, and product from a variety of rhetorical situations and sites of meaning-making. This assignment requires you to critically engage your own writing in order to discover how you craft ethos and pathos, how you use logos and kairos, and how design, delivery, and style influence these elements. You will likely find it helpful to return to our textbook and review key sections (especially those aligning with specific assignments that you want to highlight in your autoethnography).

The final autoethnography will be a five-page reflection on how you create a writing identity within a variety of writing situations that you’ve completed as a participant in an academic writing community. Look for patterns in your writing as well as differences. Consider how the genre(s) impacted your choices and, in turn, impacted your identity within the composition. Investigate how the content of different assignments informed each other and thus influenced your voice, tone, audience, etc. This is a reflection, but more importantly it is a critical, analytical composition.

In writing your essay, you’ll choose a representative number of images of compositions throughout the semester to help illustrate your growth. Composing can mean writing but can also be represented by non-textual compositions like presentations, peer review, drawings, the recast/blog. Any assignments/activities/tasks throughout the term can be used for this assignment. Take images of those items and include them in your essay as points of discussion and reflection.

Assessment Note: Final drafts will be submitted through Canvas as .doc or .docx attachments. Because this assignment is the equivalent to a final exam and because we will have discussed these at length in class through peer review and presentations, feedback will be limited to brief global responses. If you have concerns about your final grade for this assignment or wish to discuss the feedback, please arrange a meeting with me as soon as possible.
