Verb Tenses and Story Elements

This is a two-part assignment

Part A: Instructions

  1. Before completing this assignment, read and review all the required learning resources for this module.
  2. In this assignment, you will answer questions using different verb tenses to analyze a short story.
  3. Read the short story titled: “The Sister Years” from the following resource:
    • Hawthorne, N. (2016). Twice-Told tales. The Floating Press.

  4. Answer the following questions using complete sentences. Take note of the verb tense used for each question. It is usually the same verb tense you should use to answer it.
    1. Who is the main character in the story? Describe the traits of this character.
    2. Who are the secondary characters? Describe the traits of these characters.
    3. When and where does the story take place? Describe the setting.
    4. Summarize the plot of the story. What happens in the story? What is the main problem (conflict) the main character faces?
    5. How do you think the main character was feeling? Explain.
    6. What was the turning point (climax) of the story?
    7. Describe the ending (conclusion) of the story.
    8. In your opinion, what will happen next? Provide a prediction.

Part II: Instructions

  1. Imagine that you could talk to the main character of the story. What would you ask him/her? Prepare an interview script that includes at least 5 open-ended questions and the answers that the character would give to each one.
    • The questions must include information regarding present life, past experiences, what they are doing now, and plans for the future.
    • Write one question and one answer using each of the following verb tenses:
      • Simple Present
      • Present Progressive
      • Simple Past
      • Past Progressive
      • Future
    • Identify the verb tenses as indicated in the examples below.
    • Remember to write the questions and answers using the correct verb tense. For example, if you are asking about the characters past experiences, you might want to use the simple past or past progressive verb tenses.
    • Examples:
      • Question: Where did you grow up? (Simple Past)
      • Answer: I grew up in the country.  (Simple Past)
