Chapter twelve provides a fascinating overview of American policies towards the Middle East. When reading this chapter, you have the opportunity to gain perspective about the reasons for our current policy decisions and how the past has altered our views of America’s role in the region. In addition, you have read about different attempts to solve the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Here are the questions for this assignment:
1) Should the United States have a more assertive role in the Middle East or should the United States move away from a leadership role in the region? Why or why not? Can the United States disengage–even partly–from the Middle East? Why or why not?
2) Do the alliances that the United States has forged with Israel and Saudi Arabia add stability to the region or encourage destabilization? Please provide support for your answer.
