Research Paper Topics
You need to discuss (not just summarize) one or two of the works that are on our reading
list/syllabus. If you choose a piece that is/was/will not be discussed in the class, you will receive
a zero on the assignment.
Choose ONE of the following topics:
1. Compare / contrast two characters. Make sure you explain why it is worth comparing or
contrasting these two characters. Use the same characteristics to analyze both
characters (review how to write a comparison/contrast essay). Do they interact with
each other and bring out certain characteristics in each other, or are they in different
stories and just similar?
2. Show how one of the works we read and discuss in class can be considered a myth.
Use the characteristics of the myth that we discussed in class, and show which
characteristics of the myth can be applied.
3. Use the characteristics of the Epic Hero Cycle to argue that one character qualifies as a
hero.
4. Show how one character qualifies as a tragic hero.
5. Show how one character exemplifies the values of his/her culture.
Make sure you consider the following:
● Your paper needs to be at least 5 pages long (I will take 10 points off for every page that
is missing).
● You need at least 3 sources (no websites), and they need to be documented in MLA
style (I will not accept your paper without a works cited page).
● Use every source at least once in your paper.
● Be prepared to turn in copies of your sources (highlight the passages in the source that
you use in your paper) if requested.
● Your paper will receive a zero, if you cannot provide the sources, or if you do not
use any sources in your paper.
Remember that you need to come up with your own idea. This will be stated in your thesis
statement. Then, you find passages in the text that support your idea. See what other people
have to say about your topic, and use their information to support your argument. However, you
must make sure that you give credit to your sources. Any form of plagiarism, even if it is
only a sentence, will result in a zero.
