INSTRUCTIONS: Write one (1) historical essay in response to one of the following three questions. Your essay must begin with an introduction wherein you answer the test question; thereafter in your essay, show clearly the relation you see between the points you raise and your essay’s central argument. Throughout your essay, give examples and make references to time periods. Choices 1. Did the industrial revolution of the 1700s and 1800s have an overall good or bad effect on people’s daily lives? For the sake of an argument, state clearly whether, in the final analysis, the effect was positive or negative. Remember that it is best to look at the lives of a large variety of people (social groups, occupations, gender, etc.). Do not write about how the industrial revolution was caused; instead, show why, how, and when the economic transformations affected people’s lives. You might want to make analytical comparisons to life before the industrial revolution. Feel free to concentrate on Great Britain, but it helps to make some references to the continent of Europe. 2. Of the four major ideas developed in the 1800s (conservatism, liberalism, socialism–or radicalism, and nationalism) which one had the greatest influence during the 1800s? Do not give a description or definition of the ideas. Make your argument by showing examples of the ideas’ influence. Remember to focus on concepts central to the ideas: for conservatism, maintaining conditions as they had always been; for liberalism, human rights and economic freedoms guaranteed in constitutions; for radical socialists (whether utopian, anarchist, or Marxist), greater economic and social equality by living outside capitalism; and for nationalists, the willingness to form nation-states which unite people under one common religion, language, tradition, history, and/or natural geography. Analytical comparisons of the influence exerted by the various ideas would help your essay. 3. Starting in the late 1800s, Europe began a new type of expansion. Unlike the “colonialism” of the past, which focused on the Americas, the “imperialism” of the late 1800s saw Europe carve Africa into spheres of influence and develop a historically unprecedented influence in Asia. Which continent (Africa or Asia) did worse in their interactions with Europe? You might look at the issues of political alliances, social transformations, economic impact, European laws, treaties, and warfare, among other points you raised to support your argument.
