the crucible

In The Crucible, playwright Arthur Miller effectively conveys that revenge can hurt innocent people. Arthur Miller displays the danger of revenge, depicting the real consequences based on false accusations. Arthur Miller showed this through the conflict between Giles and Putnam, Abigail and Elizabeth and Marth Corey and Walcott

Arthur Miller uses Abigale and Elithbath as an example in the book to show how revenge can hurt innocent people  “Elizabeth Proctor hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It’s a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman!.” (Miller 12 ).     Abigale wants Elithbath hanged with the others; she accuses Elithbath of witchcraft even though Elithbath is innocent Abigale accuses her because she wants revenge after Elizabeth kicks her out of her house due to the affair that was happening between her and Proctor.

“I will fear nothing. She looks about the room as though to fix her mind. Tell children I have gone to visit someone sick.” (Miller 78)   Elizabeth is terrified after getting taken out of her house to jail after Abigail accused her of attempted murder and witchcraft after finding a needle inside the poppet, which represents when Abigail fell to the floor screaming after being stabbed with a needle into her stomach while eating at Parris’ house. Arthur Miller effectively uses this quote to show how revenge can hurt innocent people by showing Abigale’s intentions towards Elithbeth for blaming Elizabeth entirely for doing nothing. The author uses pathos, specifically when Elizabeth says, "Tell children I have gone to visit someone sick," which shows how sad and miserable it is for Abigail to leave her child behind for having to be accused of something she didn’t do.

Auther Miller uses Giles Corey and Putnam as another example of how revenge can hurt innocent people. “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property—that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece.” (Miller 96)  Giles Corey accuses Thomas Putnam of telling his daughter to cry witchery on George Jacobs so that he may take Jacobs’ land.Giles accuses Putnam of killing his neighbors for their land. so he can buy abandoned property after the accused’s executions. Putnam has a history of false accusations.
