Writing Guidelines

  • Please write in complete, coherent sentences. Do not use abbreviations or incomplete sentences in any of your Written Assignment submissions. Your Written Assignments need to be in paragraph form and spaced appropriately so that they are easy to read.
  • Make sure to check for spelling/grammar errors and capitalize words as appropriate.
  • Unless stated otherwise in the prompt, you should include:
    • A course reference (the textbook or lecture NOT materials from the prompt)
    • A credible outside source (a source you found on your own and not found on our course site).
  • Make sure to give credit to information you learned from the textbook or outside sources by using APA formatted in-text citations and cite all sources in a reference list (including your textbook). Without proper citation, you are plagiarizing! See APA & Library Resources under Assignment Information & Resources on our Canvas course site.

THE ACTUAL WRITING PROMPT AND QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED

For Applied Activity 1, watch a romantic drama or romantic comedy movie. Pay attention to communication styles and conflict resolution.

As adults, men are more likely to communicate about content or projects, whereas women are more likely to communicate about relationships and feelings. Was this consistent with what you observed during the movie? [4 points for Content rubric criteria]

Using Harriet Lerners ideas (see Chapter 5) about the various styles of managing anger, focus on the main couple from the movie.

  1. Which character tends to be the pursuer or a distancer? How did they exhibit those styles? [4 points for Content rubric criteria]
  2. An overfunctioner or an underfunctioner? How did they exhibit those styles? [4 points for Content rubric criteria]
  3. A blamer or a blame taker? How did they exhibit those styles? [4 points for Content rubric criteria]
  4. Rate each character on a scale from 1 (low) to 10 (high) on each of the dimensions discussed in Questions 1 – 3. Are they performing any dance based on these style differences? If so, how could they create a healthier dance? [4 points for Content rubric criteria]

Note: Although you should cite the romantic drama or romantic comedy movie, make sure to also integrate a credible outside source.
