Read the following hypothetical scenario.  Play devil’s advocate when deciding on your answer. In other words, make a case for both sides of the argument.

  • The grading criterion for earning an A in your class is 90-100%.
  • Suppose you have a student in the class with an 89.0% average at the end of the semester.  The student asks you to bump their grade up to 90% in order to receive an A.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN YOUR ONE-PAGE RESPONSE:

  • If you were the teacher, what would you do? Why or why not?
  • Please explain both SIDES with convincing arguments. (I would bump the student’s grade up because… AND I wouldn’t bump the student’s grade up because…)
  • What would be an alternative to the grading criterion the teacher is using?  For example, instead of grades being based on percentages, would there be an alternative solution?
