Question for Assignment

How does the story A Posthumous Son show that the birth of a son is an important business?

Your answer  must display comprehension,  reflection,  and application.

Outline

You need to write three paragraphs:

 Paragraph  1: Comprehension

 Paragraph  2: Reflection

 Paragraph  3: Application

Paragraph  1: Comprehension

You need to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the story.

Here are some of the questions you might want to address in this paragraph:

How was the wife treated when she failed to produce a son?

What was her treatment when she had a son?

What happened to the second wife when she gave birth to a daughter?

What happened when the son died?

You need to show a deep and personal understanding of the story.

You need to give specific examples and quotes from the story.

You need  to provide  detailed  evidence  from the  text to support  your arguments and claims.  In your discussions  and analyses,  you should always try to explain  how and why,  in addition  to what. In other words,  you should  substantiate  your arguments/claims  with  evidence, i.e.,  examples  or details  from the text.

Do not forget  to provide  in-text  citation information.  Usually  you would include the authors last name and the page number at the

end of the citation, e.g.,  (Ye 23).

Paragraph  2: Reflection

In paragraph 1 you may focus on the comprehension of the story. You may express your own opinions in the second paragraph. In other words, you may focus on your interpretation in this paragraph.

Here you should talk about how you FEEL about the wifes situation, and the way she was treated.

Your response should be insightful, original and complex. Here is your chance to voice your own opinion on the issue.

As always, you need to substantiate your argument with evidence. In other words, you need to provide a detailed explanation as to why you think/feel  this way.

 Insightful means a deep understanding.

Original means it is your own original idea based on who you are, your unique  personality  and experience.

Complexity comes from different angles from which you look at the issue.  Try to analyze the issue from various perspectives.

Paragraph  3: Application

Question for this paragraph:

Do you think that gender discrimination still exists in Chinese culture (or Canadian culture) today?  Explain why.

You may discuss forms of gender discrimination in todays societies/cultures, Chinese or others around the world. Again, you need to support your arguments with details and examples from the world/life around you.
