Question: Select an aspect of communication from Chapter 2, or an aspect of culture from Chapter 3, and explain how it might create the possibility for misunderstandings when cultures come into contact. Use an example from your personal experience at work, home, or in the world.
There are many possible choices for this post — in order that we get a broad coverage of the Chapter 2 and 3 content, please select a topic which has not already been addressed by one of your peers.

Communication and Culture
Communication is a continual process. We are constantly communicating by the way we dress, comb or do not comb our hair, how we walk, how we sit, whether we smile, frown, or have no facial expression, or make eye-contact or not. (“Lecture 1B,” n.d., para. 2)
This leads me to wondering about the Arabic culture. When it comes to nonverbal communication, a lot of wonders can be set off. For example, in the Arab culture, henna tattoos represent good luck, health and wellness. In some cultures, their beliefs are that tattoos are a disgrace to their bodies.
Many Americans have the idea that all Arab women wear veils all the time. This can cause misunderstandings when the different cultures come in contact. One may think that the Arab woman is hiding herself and is not open to communicate, where reality is that Arab woman are very modest and conservative. I’ve also heard that in the Arabic culture, there are fixed marriages at times. I have met an Arabic family before and they have set a “fixed engagement” for their daughter, however she was not a happy camper! What if she wanted someone from a different culture/race but can’t because it’s out of her culture “boundaries?”

Perception of cultures in comparison to other cultures is very important. The act of perception itself is a three step process that includes; selection, organization, and interpretation. Selection with the use of sight bases the foundation of perception. Organization from the data absorbed through sight is key in determining the significance of what is being viewed so that it is put in a meaningful way, which would bring about interpretation (Jandt p. 66-63).
Take the swastika for an example. Upon first sight of this symbol, most associate it with Adolf Hitler and his Nazi army who were responsible for the slaughter of millions in the Holocaust. In terms of related thinking, it is also seen as the symbol for the Ku Klux Klan who share similar views on the idea of superiority and the unity of the white race.
But what most don’t know is that long before Hitler was even a thought, some 5,000 years ago, and the swastika was an ancient symbol depicted on temples in India, as well rendered as a sacred symbol in the likes of Buddhism and Hinduism. The symbol represented “good fortune” or “well-being” (History of the Swastika, 2014).
A hypothetical example of how misunderstandings amongst different cultures pertaining to this symbol could be that of a Jewish American traveling on vacation to Asia. Taking in the sights of the ancient culture, if this person came across this symbol, it would evoke and whirlwind of emotion because the meaning behind the symbol is perceived different in his/her culture. It would have to be communicated with his/her words (and possibly a language interpreter) what the symbolism means to native culture and vice versa. Misunderstandings happen amongst different cultures and within same cultures. The perception can be explained with the use of communication to help reach a mutual understanding.

Culture and Religion = Profit?
Goods and services have been exchange by differing countries for centuries. Through the advancement of technology it has enabled countries to adopt certain industrial benefits. The western world has always prided itself with being at the forefront of innovative modern technology. So, when a corporation by the name of Johnston Pump Company based out of the U.S., set its eyes on the potential partnership with the Saudi Arabia the money came poring in. The business blossomed to a long and lucrative relationship. It was not however the ingenuity which thrived the relationship, but a respect and regard for cultural religious beliefs of a foreign people. (Jandt, 2013, p.68-69)
As I worked for carpet cleaning company for many years, I found myself dealing directly with small and large commercial businesses. It was through a non-for profit organizing namely a Christian Church, which helped me appreciate Johnston Pump Companies savvy business approach. I was selling big industrial vacuums that provided quick and efficient cleaning of large tiled and carpeted areas. At the time my lack of religious understanding hampered my ability to properly sale items, as communications haltered due to a products name. The company I worked for sold two vacuums, which lead the industry in product revenue. One called the “Kirby” and the other “The Dirt Devil”, so while the Kirby was more high-tech and expensive, The Dirt Devil appealed to those with less funds to spend.
The church decided to reject my services entirely, stating that the Kirby was too expensive and that The Dirt Devil was, well lets put it “guilty by association”. So by not familiarizing myself with the Christian culture and religious beliefs, I could not as Johnston Pump Company gain a lucrative profit. As stated in our book, “With the perception step of categorization comes a culture’s values, and it is those differing categorizations that can so often impede communication, particularly when one group believes its perceptions are right and any other’s wrong”. (Jandt, 2013, p.69)

To be competent in intercultural communication, individuals must understand the social customs and social system of the host culture. Understanding how a people think and behave is essential for effective communication with them” (Jandt 36).
Working in the medical field, it is difficult enough to understand the mechanics of the human body. Cultural awareness is extremely important while working with the diverse community of San Diego and makes sense when trying to be an effective nurse for so many different cultures. A general understanding of religious/ cultural believes and daily practices can aid patient education and action towards their personal care plan.
Those individuals who did not have access to routine medical care growing up, typically do not believe in preventative medicine or alterations of life’s habit to accommodate for an aging body.
For example, my father is the typical Filipino senior who is dragged to routine office visits with his MD due to his belief that Doctors don’t know anything and push medication on patients due to the “kick back” they receive from the pharmaceutical industry. His experience with diagnosis and medication must be immediate positive response, otherwise he is noncompliant with his personal care plan. Married to my mother who is a retired Registered Nurse after 45 years of service, who holds a completely different belief to the healthcare system. She continually chases him with pills to treat his expected ailments after a long life of the Filipino diet, lack of exercise and appreciation of alcohol. Unless his belief (or faith) in doctors change, he will continue to believe going to and following the doctor’s advice is a waste
