Write a short paper (500 words) discussing the ethical issues involved in the research situations described in Review Question 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, and 1e on page 89 in the textbook.
- Be sure to include two articles as references.
1. Consider the following real and hypothetical research situations. What is the ethicalcomponent in each example? How do youfeel about it? Do you think the proceduresdescribed are ultimately acceptable or unacceptable? You might fi nd it useful to discusssome of these situations with classmates.
a. A psychology instructor asks students inan introductory psychology class to complete questionnaires that the instructorwill analyze and use in preparing a journalarticle for publication.
b. After a field study of deviant behaviorduring a riot, law enforcement offi cialsdemand that the researcher identify thosepeople who were observed looting. Ratherthan risk arrest as an accomplice after thefact, the researcher complies.
c. After completing the fi nal draft of a bookreporting a research project, the researcherauthor discovers that 25 of the 2,000 survey interviews were falsifi ed by interviewers. To protect the bulk of the research,the author leaves out this information andpublishes the book.
d. Researchers obtain a list of right-wingradicals they wish to study. They contactthe radicals with the explanation thateach has been selected at random fromamong the general population to take asampling of public opinion.
e. A college instructor who wants to test theeffect of unfair berating administers an hour exam to both sections of a specific course The overall performance of thetwo sections is essentially the same. Thegrades of one section are artifi cially lowered, however, and the instructor beratesthe students for performing so badly. Theinstructor then administers the samefi nal exam to both sections and discovers that the performance of the unfairlyberated section is worse. The hypothesisis confi rmed, and the research report ispublished.
