We have thus far in this course made an exploration into leadership concepts, models, and theories, and the roles of both change and ethics in leadership. We have also considered the importance of the context and culture in which leadership takes places. As we finish up, to take advantage of the fact that most of us are watching shows anyhow… let us explore these concepts as they appear in pop culture. :)

For this discussion, watch a movie or a season of a TV series in which characters(s) engage in some administration, management, or leadership. This will not be hard: Pop culture is all about leadership in many cases. Pick a film or a TV (or web) series. Almost any genre is fine -feel free to use anime, foreign films, or etc- but let’s avoid porn, snuff films, hate-mongering (no ‘Birth of a Nation‘, etc) and/or other potentially contentious works. Describe the story in general and your chosen character(s)’ role in it, then answer the following questions:

  • Describe the character’s or characters’ leadership in terms of the models, styles, and/or theories they seem to most clearly emulate. What is their general attitude toward their role as a leader?
  • Describe their approach to change – how do they bring about change? What sort of notions do they seem to bring to the concept of change? What is their general attitude toward change?
  • What values do these characters seem to bring to their leadership roles? Do they comport themselves in what you would consider an ethical nature, guided by morals?*
  • Are these characters effective leaders in their contexts? Do you feel that you could employ their approaches in your own career and life? What can you learn from this film/series about leadership and/or change?

Make sure to provide examples that support your assertions about all of the above. If you feel that a character is demonstrating a transactional approach to leadership, provide evidence from the source that supports this in the form of a description of the behavior and context and a time-stamp (i.e., 0:37:21 means 37 minutes, 21 seconds into the source). There are no additional required readings for this assignment. Review previous assignments and readings prior to watching and making your original post as needed – you may want to use some of the resources to inform this discussion. Make an original post by Dec 10th and engage in discussion with your peers until Dec 17th.

OPTION: If you’d like to use a real world leader for this assignment (politics, business, etc) instead of a fictional character, feel free to do so. Just use the same guidelines as above. Provide plenty of evidence to support your conclusion. And focus on the leadership approaches rather than your underlying assessment of the person: Bad people can have good leadership skills, as we have discussed; we’re interested in those skills here, not assessing the validity of underlying values. And the discussion will inevitably be derailed if we start debating the merits and demerits of various political figures external to their relevant leadership skills, so let’s emphasize those.
